Author Guidelines

Submissions must be accompanied by a brief covering letter from the corresponding author. We will return submissions without the cover letter listing recommended reviewers.

Scope of Publication

Full research article: JBM favors publication of original research articles that represent significant advances in any field of basic and translational science. Acceptance of research articles will be based on importance to the scientific progress (Innovation is not a requirement). Manuscripts submitted in this category are expected to be concise, well organized and clearly written. Negative but meaningful studies are equally considered for publication. All manuscripts are reviewed independently by at least two experts in the field. All submitted manuscripts are considered to present original contributions and contain NO data that has been published elsewhere.

Short communication: JBM welcomes concise and short communications that represent a significant contribution or opinion to any topic of interest from basic and translational science. Short communications provide researchers with a venue where they can share their latest research findings or opinions in the concise format. Short communications will also be sent to peer reviewing.

Review: JBM welcomes mini-reviews on topics of wide interest to investigators in the life sciences. We particularly encourage submission of brief, focused reviews containing high-quality artwork and mechanistic diagrams.

Clinical case reports: Clinical case reports are expected to be submitted by an expert clinician. They describe information about a patient presenting new or representative symptoms and complications. They show the process of clinical decision-making and corresponding treatment strategies. Via case report a clinician shares his or her response to diseases and reasoning with the audience. A brief report focuses on only one patient or a single family.

Other submissions: We also welcome other submissions such as letter to editor and perspective articles.

Manuscript Organization and Format

The manuscripts should be submitted by a corresponding author.

Cover letter:  A concise summary of the background and findings (1-2 paragraphs) should be included in the cover letter.  Authors are encouraged to provide a list of recommended reviewers (up to 5 people) and their contact information. Conflict of interest should also be included in the cover letter.

Research Article and Communication: Manuscripts submitted in these two categories should include the following sections: Title Page, Abstract, Introduction, Results, Discussion, Methods, Acknowledgments, References, Figures, and Tables (if applicable). There is no word limit, but authors are encouraged to write concisely.

Reviews and Perspectives: Manuscripts submitted in these two categories should include the following sections: Title Page, Abstract, main text, References, Figures and Tables (if applicable).  JBM does not strictly reinforce the structure of main text.

Formats: Manuscript should be submitted in Microsoft Word files and be double spaced. All pages should be numbered. Nonstandard abbreviation should be spelled out at first mention.

Title Page should list the title, full name of all authors and their affiliations. Use superscript numbers (1, 2, 3, etc.) to assign affiliations. The full name, address, telephone, fax and email of the corresponding author should be included.  Conflict-of-interest statement should also be included.

The abstract should state the background, objectives, findings, and conclusions. Nonstandard abbreviations must be defined.

Acknowledgments should include financial sources of the study. Other appropriate acknowledgments are also encouraged.

Citation format: The references should be indicated in the text by sequential numbers in parentheses (do not use superscript). In the Reference section, list references numbered in the order in which they appear in the text.  AMA style (AMA Manual of Style, 10th edition, pages 39-79) is used in JBM. Abbreviate names of journals should be those appeared in the PubMed Journals list.  A few reference styling examples are listed below:
